A To The Rescue Host Home is a supportive, independent living option for people with disabilities who benefit from personalized services in a home-based setting. We help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities live in private, family homes where they can participate in the everyday activities of family and community life.

Individuals may have support needs that include physical assistance with personal care, mental health or behavior support needs or individuals may be independent with only occasional support needed.

Our host home program begins with a highly personalized matching process that considers the preferred activities, hobbies and desired family composition (kids, no kids; pets, no pets) of the individual. Likewise, the preferences of the host home family are considered in making a successful match.

What is a host home?

About Us

To The Rescue Iowa Host Homes are a unique living arrangement where an individual or family in the community opens their home to a person with an intellectual or developmental disability. Host homes provide individuals with a sense of family and community. Through this supportive living option, individuals receive the personalized services they need to live independent, joyful lives in a home-based setting.

A host home helps individuals live life to the fullest in a family setting. The home’s primary caregiver may provide services for the individual such as coordinating appointments, medications, personal care, transportation, meals and recreational activities. Care is taken to match a host home with the individual to ensure that a meaningful relationship can develop. The goal is to create bonds of friendship and family while providing needed support.

Who is eligible to live in a host home?

How do I become a host home provider?

Host home providers are independent contractors who are paid a per diem rate for the supervision and care of an adult with a disability; they also are paid a monthly fee for room and board.

If you are thinking that becoming a host home provider may be for you, or if you have questions, one of our residential experts would be happy to walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have. Generally speaking, the primary host home caregiver must:

  • pass a background check, as well as other
individuals 18+ years of age residing in the home
  • have a valid driver’s license and vehicle
insurance, as well as a vehicle that passes all
    safety checks
  • provide professional references

After background and other checks are completed, a To The Rescue staff member will walk you through the process to ensure that your home meets all requirements to safely serve an adult with a disability.

In most cases, host homes must allow for an individual receiving services to have private use of their own bedroom; however, host homes vary in type and size, from apartments to condominiums to single family homes.
