When a loved one is diagnosed with a chronic health condition, it can be tough to know how to best support them. Of course, you want to do everything you can to help them feel better and manage their symptoms. But sometimes you have to think unconventionally to assist them as they need. To The Rescue suggests seven ways to support your loved one with a chronic health condition:

1. Be their cheerleader

One of the best things you can do for your loved one is to be their biggest cheerleader. When they’re feeling down or frustrated, be there to encourage them and help them see the silver lining. Help them focus on their progress, not their setbacks. And most importantly, remind them that they’re not alone in this fight.

2. Do some research

If your loved one has been diagnosed with a chronic health condition, chances are they’re not the only one. There are likely millions of other people out there who are dealing with the same thing. 

Do some research and find some helpful resources that your loved one can use to better understand and manage their condition. This could include books, websites, blog posts, articles, etc. The more knowledgeable your loved one is about their condition, the better equipped they’ll be to manage it effectively.

3. Go to School

Returning to school for a degree can help your loved one with a chronic condition in many ways. For one, nurses are highly skilled professionals who can provide vital care and support to those who need it. 

Additionally, nurses can also play a key role in advocating for their patients and helping them to manage their conditions. 4. Get involved in their care

Your loved one needs to feel empowered and in control of their own care, but if they want and need help, offer to be there for them.

5. Help with everyday tasks

Chronic health conditions can make everyday tasks seem impossible. Offer to help your loved one with anything they might need assistance with, whether it’s running errands, doing household chores, or even just getting out of bed in the morning. Sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest difference.

6. Help arrange a new living environment

If your loved one has a progressive disease or one that limits their independence, researching local long-term care communities is a must. You’ll want to find a facility that can accommodate your loved one’s specific needs and provide them with the best possible quality of life. You can start your search by contacting your loved one’s doctor or looking at online lists of communities. 

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, visit each community and ask questions about their services, amenities, and staff. Be sure to tour the facilities to get a sense of what they would be like to live in. 

7. Be patient

Dealing with a chronic health condition can be frustrating, especially when symptoms flare up or progress isn’t being made as quickly as desired. It’s important to be patient with your loved one and remind them that healing takes time. Encourage them to pace themselves and not push too hard—both physically and emotionally—to give themselves the best chance at recovery. 


When a loved one is diagnosed with a chronic health condition, it can be difficult to know how best to support them—but it’s important to try. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is something that’s a little out of the box.
